On a warm afternoon at Brookfield Zoo in Illinois, a routine family trip almost turned into an unimaginable tragedy. A 3-year-old boy slipped away from his mother, climbed over a safety railing, and fell 18 feet into a deep concrete gorilla enclosure.
The fall left the young boy unconscious with a severe head injury. Above the pit, terrified visitors gasped in horror as screams echoed through the crowd. A Hero with Maternal Instincts
Among the troop was Binti Jua, an 8-year-old western lowland gorilla who was carrying her own 17-month-old baby, Koola, on her back. Instead of reacting with territorial anger, Binti Jua did something that stunned the entire world.
She approached the motionless toddler carefully. Bending down, she gently scooped the bleeding boy into her arms, cradling him against her chest just like her own infant. When another curious gorilla moved closer, Binti Jua growled firmly, making it clear that the fallen human child was under her protection.
Delivering the Child to Safety
Carrying both her own baby and the unconscious boy, Binti Jua walked approximately 60 feet across the enclosure toward the service door. She set the boy down gently near the entrance where zoo keepers and paramedics could easily reach him, stepping back so the humans could perform their rescue safely.
Paramedics quickly rushed the boy to Loyola University Medical Center. Miraculously, despite critical injuries from the fall, the boy made a full recovery within days. Doctors confirmed that had Binti Jua not guarded him, the outcome could have been fatal.
